Have a fabulous Mabon weekend! Please enjoy a few fun offerings from my recently re-released Mabon book (www.spilledcandy.com)
Hot Mulled Apple Cider
½ cup brown sugar dash nutmeg
1 tsp whole allspice 3 cinnamon sticks
1 tsp whole cloves 2 quarts apple cider
¼ tsp salt
Combine brown sugar, allspice, 1 tsp cloves, salt, nutmeg, cinnamon and apple cider in large saucepan.
Bring to boiling. Cover and simmer for 20 minutes.
Strain to remove spices.
Paraffin Leaves
Paraffin can be found at most hobby and craft stores where candle making supplies are sold. Melt the paraffin according to the manufacturer's directions and quickly dip your chosen leaves in. Set them aside on wax paper to dry. Once they are dry, you can gently inscribe them with your names or special words and symbols of the season. Use them to decorate your home and altars.
The first was a Cooper's Hawk whose wing just didn't mend well enough to let her get any lift. I gave her months in the huge flight cage but it just wasn't happening. Blue light filled the space above her as she passed out of this life into the next. It was surprisingly beautiful and she went quickly for a healthy bird. It seems she was ready to move on.
The other was easier on the heart. My son and I released a Pied-billed Grebe into a protected pond this afternoon. The little booger ate 200 feeder fish in less than 24 hours! Nearly 600 in the time I got him back from another rehabber! Yikes. He swam around in front of us for a while and made several long underwater dives before setting off across the water. YAY
Both types of release are hard on the rehabber, in very different ways. May the gods watch over them both and bless their journeys!
What a cool idea! Spilled Candy Books (www.spilledcandy.com) is running a contest to choose a cover for the revised and re-released version of my "Mabon" book. They have two great covers up right now.
I am nearly finished with the cookbook too. Gods, that has been a TON of fun to do. I am planning to have that in to Spilled Candy by May 1 because I know I will have little time to write and NO time to cook and play with recipes once the clinic's busy season starts. I clocked it this morning - with no babies in house and only 4 injured raptors (plus the houseload of permanent ones), it took me over an hour to get everyone fed and medicated. And my falcon needs meds 3x/day. Imagine when I've got babies to feed every hour. YIKES
